January Board Meeting
Minnesota weather reminds me of lobbying. How many of us braced for the winter storm predicted a couple of days after the board meeting? We filled the gas tank, stocked the pantry, checked on friends and family to make sure they were hunkered down, and waited. I won’t say I was disappointed that we didn’t the amount of snow predicted.
Being prepared matters. Maybe more so when you don’t know with 100% clarity what’s going to happen next.
That’s like the work we do on our NMMA legislative work plan. We get our priorities negotiated, our alliances lined up, and we begin to tell our story at the Capitol. We expect plot twists during session. We adapt while we stay true to our mission. Being agile is one of our greatest strengths. Another one of our greatest strengths is we don’t go it alone. We band together with a regional message that resonates. That reminds me. Please mark March 18 on your calendar for the North Metro Mayors Association Day at the Capitol. We’ll mix and match cities again to deliver the regional message. Exact times to be determined on appointments; the board meeting is anticipated late afternoon at or near the capitol.
At our January board meeting, we had tremendous turnout from mayors, councilmembers and Community Partners. The conversation was lively, with a discussion led by Anoka County Commissioner Mandy Meisner on the new federal executive order that says local governments must opt-in to allow refugees. Mandy is no longer contracting with NMMA as she focuses on her county role. We’ll continue to collaborate!
We recognized Tiffany Schmidt for her contributions to NMMA, especially the updating of bylaws and the joint powers board agreement. We wish her well as she begins a new career at the state Bureau of Mediation Services. BTW, should you need a mediator from the Bureau, you can (and should) request her. We’ll miss her as a Community Partner.
The legislative work plan is set. And, it’s fluid. We’ll send members copies soon. Thank you, Coon Rapids, for being a wonderful host, as always.
One more thing…check your calendar for Jan. 30. MetroNorth Chamber is hosting a legislative reception first thing in the morning in Andover. All are welcome. Check the website for details: https://www.metronorthchamber.org/
Stay safe out there.
