North Metro Mayors Minute – June 2020
Three things I learned about north metro cities on the front line of today’s challenges
The June North Metro Mayors Operating Committee was a welcome opportunity to check in via Zoom with neighbors on how we’re surviving and thriving in times of COVID-19 and civil unrest. These folks are rock stars. Three things stood out for me.
- Building permits are up and show no signs of slowing up. Remodeling projects top the list of things happening in residential neighborhoods. Honey-do lists, anyone? Some commercial development plans have slowed down but road projects are moving full steam ahead. Speaking of road projects, it was announced this week that federal money is coming for Highway 10 projects in Ramsey. Yeah!
- The families of law enforcement are feeling the civil unrest, too. We heard stories of peace officers’ kids taking heat from playmates over the idea that police are racists.
- Partnerships are finding new ways to collaborate. Al Ickler, executive director, Community and Government Relations for Anoka Hennepin Schools, spoke with us to ask for help in figuring out childcare scenarios for this fall. Nine of our members are in that district, others no doubt have parents working in their communities. Al explained one of the scenarios calls for a modified classroom schedule. If only a percentage of students can be in a room with the teacher on any given day, where will the others go if parents are working? The school buildings can’t accommodate the space needs of thousands of kids in childcare. Do the cities or community partners have ideas on where childcare could occur? The school would supply the staffing. Here’s a link to a Google doc from Al. Please provide notes on your ideas by mid July and Al will follow up with you. Thank you.
Our next meeting is Sept. 16. It’s scheduled for Ramsey at 5:30 p.m. Depending on the COVID-19 situation, we may switch to a 4 p.m. Zoom call. Stay tuned.
Enjoy the best of Minnesota summer. Jill
