North Metro Mayors Minute for October 2020
The first metro-area COVID-19 saliva testing location opened Oct. 20 in Brooklyn Park. Located on a bus line in the Starlite Center, 8085 Brooklyn Blvd, free testing is available to all Minnesotans at this site seven days a week. Walk-up service is available, and you can schedule an appointment ahead of time. Jay Stroebel, city manager, reported at the North Metro Mayors Operating Committee meeting Oct. 21 that the first day had 700 appointments. The site can manage 1,500 people per day. The October Operating Committee meeting was held in Andover and on Zoom. City Administrator Jim Dickinson led a tour of the community center renovation and addition. With double the space, the community center is the hub of activity for sports, after school activities, and the YMCA.
Troy Olsen shared details of the successful bonding bill and expressed gratitude to cities, businesses, and legislators who worked together to get the bill done. The north metro did very well. And, now it’s time to begin talking about the next session.
Speaking of legislators, October saw a few candidate forums. In past years, we’ve held a couple dozen forums for legislative races. This year we have about 50 candidates for house and senate seats in our territory. We weren’t able to accommodate all pandemic comfort levels or schedules (surprise special session during a few planned forums). We did, however, hold successful events in Coon Rapids, Brooklyn Park, Mounds View, and New Brighton. Thank you to those cities and cable TV staff! Our moderators, Lori Higgins from Metro North Chamber and John Connelly from Twin Cities North Chamber, were awesome. And a special thank you goes to incumbents and challengers who were able to participate.
The next gathering is a full board meeting on Nov. 18, 5:30 p.m., hybrid in Maple Grove city council chambers and Zoom. As always, contact me with ideas or questions. Thanks. Jill Brown, executive director, email JillCBrown@msn.com, cell 612-889-2611
